Recent breeding bird surveys in Iowa have shown that grasslands are lacking the necessary factors certain birds need for an adequate nesting habitat. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has been working on conservation efforts to improve the grassland habitatin Southern Iowa. Many species are benefitting from these projects, not only Prairie Chickens but also northern harriers, short eared owls, pheasants, upland sandpipers, eastern and western meadowlarks and others.
Come out the Prairie Chicken Viewing Festival to enjoy breakfast while viewing Prairie Chickens as they conduct their annual spring ritual in a natural setting. DNR staff will be present to answer questions about the birds. Be sure to bring your binoculars!
