Outdoor Outings

As the Outdoor Nation 2012 Summit season was wrapping up in Atlanta in November, the Atlanta Campus Clubs Program was just kicking off bringing together university students from Emory University, Spelman College and Morehouse College with youth from the Next Steps Youth Entrepreneur Program.

November: Atlanta Fellows and students at Stone Mountain Campground during the Atlanta Outdoor Nation Summit. Although this group was a part of the larger group of Outdoor Nation Summit delegates, the university Fellows and high school students had a chance to discuss camping skills including setting up a tent, building a fire, and Leaving No Trace.

January: The Atlanta Fellows and high school students spent an afternoon at Stone Summit Climbing & Fitness Center in Atlanta. Lynn, an Emory Fellow and frequent climber, trained other Fellows in belay and climbing techniques ahead of the event.

February: The Atlanta group spent the day horseback riding at Linda's Riding School in nearby Conyers, Georgia. Many group members had not previously been riding before and despite the rainy weather, everyone enjoyed the day!

April: The fellows and youth celebrated Earth Day by participating in the Next Step Youth Entrepreneur Program's Global Youth Service Day at the Atwood Community Gardens & Urban Farm. The group spent the morning weeding, installing bat houses and bee hives and planting crops and then they enjoyed a picnic garden party!

April: As the finale of the year, the Atlanta group travelled north to the state border with South Carolina to spend the day canoeing and kayaking on the Chattooga Wild & Scenic River with the Wildwater guides.
