New York ON-IT Summit:

Hey New York Outsiders!

We had an amazing time working with you all in New York.  If you haven’t already, check out pictures from the summit on Facebook.

Thanks to your hard work, here are the projects that received funding:

Farm to Table Youth Team- Establishing an internship program for low-income high school students to work at Baltimore City urban farms.

Pay it 4Ward- A playful competition that uses a Facebook platform to inspire friends to help get friends outside.

Teach Me How to Fish- A series of seasonal field days hosted in local parks throughout the year that will teach participants the physical techniques and skills necessary to maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle.

Youth Database- To establish an information database that focuses on identifying various NYC events that deal with getting the fun outside.

Here are the key issues you guys voted on preventing your peers from getting outside.

  • Lack of mentorship and “paying it forward” when it comes to experiencing the outdoors and teaching outdoor recreation skills.
  • Lack of connection to and experience in the outdoors from a young age.
  • Too much dependency and inability to be away from electronics
  • There are cultural and socioeconomic divides creating strong perceptions that outdoor recreation activities are only for elite Caucasian people.
  • There is a lack of support for young people who want to get outdoors.

Be sure to make an account on the Outdoor Nation website and join the New York City 2012 summit club to stay connected with your fellow outsiders.

Also, check out our grants page for info on how to receive more funding for your project ideas!
