$10,000 awarded to young outdoor leaders.
Washington, DC (July 30, 2012) - Outdoor Nation, the Millennial-led movement championing the outdoors, and Grassroots Alliance, a group of independent outdoor retailers, today announced the winners of four activation grants totaling $10,000. Grantees are young outdoor leaders ages 18 to 28 who have innovative ideas for ‘grassroots’ projects that get young people outdoors and active. The winning projects come from bright young leaders who work at one of the more than 80 Grassroots Outdoor Alliance specialty stores. The initiative is part of the Outdoor Nation grant program, which invests in projects spearheaded by the next generation of outdoor leaders.
“We are proud to support young outdoor leaders as they inspire their peers to get outside and get active,” said Chris Fanning, executive director of the Outdoor Foundation, the organization that oversees Outdoor Nation. “Outdoor Nation-funded projects cultivate a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts by making the outdoors more accessible and more engaging.”
The grant winners, current employees at Grassroots Outdoor Alliance member stores, will receive money for projects aimed at increasing outdoor participation and highlighting the work of specialty outdoor retailers. The projects serve various audiences and activities include photography, healing through outdoor recreation, leadership and team building and outdoor activity based-clinics. “The Grassroots Outdoor Alliance is pleased to support these youth-led projects from some of our most committed and enthusiastic employees,” said Roanne Miller, President of Grassroots Alliance. “The projects are innovative and diverse and will engage youth in outdoor activities and inspire them to explore the natural world.”
Over the past year, Outdoor Nation has awarded more than $150,000 for projects that reconnect young people with nature, and it will continue to announce more grants throughout the year. For more details on all Outdoor Nation grant opportunities, please visit www.outdoornation.org/grants.
